Why the Duke of York Has Surrendered His Official Honors – and the Implications for the Royal Family
Through a statement issued by the royal household, the king's brother has confirmed that he will be giving up his official honors, including the Duke of York. Below is an overview of what was announced – and what wasn't.
What Did the Prince Said?
After previously withdrawn as a active member of the monarchy in 2019, Andrew has currently decided to “go a step further” and consent to refrain from using the “honor or the honours which have been granted to” him.
However, he used the statement to make a point of denying – consistent with his past statements – the allegations of sexual impropriety leveled at him; albeit having paid out a substantial sum to resolve the legal claim brought by Virginia Giuffre – an agreement in which he accepted no fault and strongly rejected any claims of improper conduct.
There has existed persistent pressure toward the royal institution regarding the allegations against Andrew – particularly after his disastrous Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis in 2019. He now claims he is acting to protect the royal family from additional harm caused by public speculation.
Has the King Stripped Him of His Honors?

Nevertheless, it is telling that the prince's announcement indicated this choice was made “in discussion with the king”. It appears highly likely that, behind the scenes, the royal household pushed for this in the hope of distancing the institution from Andrew.
Why Was He Not Formally Stripped of His Entire Honors?
To forcibly remove a ducal title would take an act of parliament, and would constitute such a historic move in full view of the public – it has not happened to a senior royal in more than 100 years – that it would likely cause more harm to the image for the royals.
The prince remains still a prince. At his birth in 1960, he became as the child of the sovereign. This would only be altered if a royal decree was issued by the king.

What Was the Reaction?
While he said Giuffre had been “vindicated” by the decision, her sibling Sky Roberts informed the Times that Andrew’s honorary prince title should be revoked for “true justice” to be done.
The anti-monarchist campaign group Republic has also said the move is “insufficient and delayed”, noting: “Andrew remains facing allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse of office. He ought to be stripped of all titles and his military position and should face a legal probe. Refraining from using silly medieval titles is not a punishment that fits the offences.”
