We are verifying video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to verify the site from which the pictures were from was based on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Identifying other structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
