This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as pardoning holiday birds, but the county's top official conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, donated by a local firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people shouting “six-seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The craze became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Every time, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
