The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at several agonizing personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
