The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at 81 Years of Age

The world grieves the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican musician and actor whose distinctive voice was instrumental in popularizing the reggae genre across the globe. He passed away at the age of eighty-one.

“With deep sorrow that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode and subsequent pneumonia,” wrote his spouse Latifa on Instagram. “I am grateful for his loved ones, close friends, fellow artists and colleagues who walked with him on his life’s path. To all his supporters globally, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will follow your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their children, their son and daughter.

Cliff gained fame for hits such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic musical style and uplifting spirit brought him a vast and longstanding following.

Beyond his musical accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972’s drama film “The Harder They Come”, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is considered a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.

Jimmy Cliff was one of just a handful of artists, including Bob Marley and other greats, to be honored with the prestigious Jamaican Order of Merit.
