The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Claims Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who co-founded the business with his partner, announced that he plans to personally create this new flavor as part of a personal series showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Founders versus Corporate Owner
This latest announcement escalates the continuing tension between the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have claimed that Unilever and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol for Support
The entrepreneur stated through social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol of support for Palestinians due to its colors, which mirror those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement and Current Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand which was first established in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated that he will create additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns that the company was prevented from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company recently, after many years with the organization, citing worries that its independence was undermined following corporate moves to curb its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
