The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

The victims have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
