Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Wins Maiden Trophy in Over Two Years
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been achieved on hard surfaces
A revitalized Medvedev claimed his first title for over two years with victory over opponent Moutet in the tournament championship match.
The Russian, a ex- number one, has endured a torrid season, achieving just one win at the major tournaments and experiencing a setback at the American major.
The player's varied form on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his service game in especial - resulted in him falling of the elite rankings and finally parting ways with long-term mentor his previous coach.
Currently working with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually advanced in the last few weeks - climaxing in a tightly fought three-set triumph over challenger Moutet.
This represents the player's initial championship since the Italian tournament and first on a hard court from that period of that year.
The win also signifies Medvedev has won 21 championships at twenty-one different events.
"This marks the first occasion I have attended a competition with my children simultaneously, so to secure a trophy is particularly special," commented world number 14 Medvedev.
"This title is in tribute of my younger daughter my daughter, because the initial championship I won when my child her name was delivered was for her."
Medvedev, the past champion, had lost his last six title deciders, including in Halle previously this season.
His counter-punching strategy and regular emotional displays on the tennis court had prompted observers to wonder if his ability to play at the top level was over.
Yet the player has altered his approach in the last few weeks, striving to advance forward and perform assertively, backed up by an improved serving game.
He fought back from a deficit in the initial set against the challenging Moutet, taking four of the final five points to go ahead.
The competitors traded service breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, attempting for his initial professional victory, seized the initiative to force a third set.
The opponent defended 4 early opportunities in a tight third set before the Russian broke to fifteen to serve for the match.
Appropriately, the winner secured the win with a shot at the net area, with his opponent unable to manage a shot after a lengthy match.
