The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode season written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The last season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.

However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of series six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now being produced.
