Japan's Economy Contracts while Overseas Sales Suffer by US Tariffs
Japan's economy has experienced a decline for the first time in six quarters, mainly caused by falling overseas shipments as a result of recent American tariffs.

Travel Stocks Slump during Diplomatic Dispute with China
Alongside the economic contraction, Japan is dealing with an escalating diplomatic tension with China concerning Taiwan.
Shares in Japanese travel and retail companies have dropped noticeably after China advised its citizens to refrain from traveling to Japan.
This action by Chinese authorities intensified a diplomatic feud that was sparked by statements from Tokyo's new PM about the potential of sending forces in the event of a potential Chinese invasion on Taiwan.
The situation caused a wave of sell-offs across Japan's tourism-related stocks.
- The Tokyo Disneyland operator stock fell by 5.7 percent
- Isetan Mitsukoshi plummeted by 11.3 percent
- Japan Airlines declined by 3.75%
"The ongoing dispute over Taiwan and China's travel warning discouraging visits to Japan brings short-term headwinds for retail and hospitality sectors.
"Chinese visitors account for roughly 25% of Japan's inbound traffic, making retail outlets, luxury retail, and hospitality especially vulnerable."
Economic Decline Breakdown
Japanese GDP fell by 0.4 percent in the July-September quarter, as manufacturers' overseas shipments were hit by tariffs imposed by the United States recently.
Exports were a key driver of the decline, dropping by 1.2 percent compared with the April-June quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a the same period last year.
Previously, the American government had proposed Japan with a additional 25 percent tariff on its products, which was later reduced to 15 percent when the two nations reached a trade agreement.
Consumer spending also fell, by 0.3 percent compared to the previous quarter.
On an annual basis, Japan's GDP contracted by 1.8 percent in the quarter through September.
"Japan's economy was solid in the first half of this year and the latest GDP figures showed that growth is halted for now.
I expect Japan's economy to be returning on a moderate recovery trend going forward."
The US administration has lately acknowledged the impact of tariffs on Americans, lowering tariffs on imported food products including beef, produce, coffee and bananas amid increasing concerns about rising costs.
