From Acclaim to Rage: Right-wing Response to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Mixed.
Conservative reactions to the limited disclosure of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise significant questions about what may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased transparency.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure
However, some rightwing commentators and former President allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
But a few are not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled certain rightwing figures to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively muted following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to pass a law requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained little previously unseen information.
