Ex British Serviceman Accused of Murdering Kenyan Woman Appears in Court
An individual has shown up before a judge as deportation processes began in the case of the victim Agnes Wanjiru, a woman of Kenyan origin who was found dead near a British forces camp in 2012.
Purkiss, 38, who is originally from Greater Manchester region, showed up in the Westminster court on Friday, and informed the court he intended to contest the deportation. Reports indicate that he was arrested on Thursday night.
A detention order for the defendant was released by a Nairobi court in the month of September. The state attorneys informed the Kenyan judiciary that the individual had been accused of a sole charge, of homicide, and that the Kenyan government would pursue his extradition to face charges.
He previously worked as a army medic with the Lancaster Regiment, the military regiment for the northwestern England, including on tours of Afghanistan.
The victim, 21 years old, a beautician who had a young daughter, went missing after a night out, and her corpse was discovered two months later in the premises of the lodging where she had most recently observed.
Not a single person had before been detained or indicted in association with her passing. The arrest of Purkiss came after a new police inquiry, which followed a article in the year 2021 by a weekly publication, in which the publication approached several active and retired troops in the regiment.
The probe has been led by investigators from Kenya, which, under a mutual defense pact, retains jurisdiction in the case.
