Cameroon Political Opposition Leader Confronts Legal Proceedings Concerning Electoral Turmoil, Government Declares

Political Demonstration in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon show outrage that Paul Biya has won an eighth consecutive term

The nation's Interior Minister the interior minister has announced that opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over accusations that he instigated "aggressive post-election demonstrations".

At least four demonstrators have been fatally wounded during confrontations between security forces and opposition supporters since the electoral process on October 12, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 securing an eighth presidential mandate.

Tchiroma Bakary asserts that he emerged victorious, a statement rejected by the governing party, the CPDM.

Violent crackdowns by law enforcement on protesters have alarmed the global community, with the UN, AU and EU calling for restraint.

Minister's Claims

Earlier this week, Nji charged the opposition figure of planning what he described as "unlawful" demonstrations resulting in the fatalities, and also condemned him for claiming win in the election.

He added that Tchiroma Bakary's "associates responsible for an rebellious scheme" will also undergo judicial processes.

Vote Outcome

The president, who assumed office in the early 80s and is now the most elderly national leader, obtained the October 12 presidential election with 53.7% of the votes, compared to a significant minority for Tchiroma Bakary, according to the constitutional court.

Leader's Stance

The opposition figure is yet to respond to the government's decision to bring him to court, but he had previously declared that he rejected a stolen vote - and that he was undaunted of being arrested.

Following the vote count, he claimed that armed men shot on demonstrators assembled near his house in Garoua, causing the death of at least 2 civilians.

Probe Launched

On Tuesday, the interior minister disclosed that an investigation would be initiated into unrest before and after the declaration of the election results.

"Throughout the violence, some of the perpetrators were killed," he commented, without giving a precise figure of protesters who have been lost their lives in the incidents.

The minister further mentioned that a number of officers of the law enforcement also sustained major harm.

Current Situation

Even though Nji maintained the state of affairs across the country was now manageable, protesters are still demonstrating in various areas of the country, especially in urban centers, where demonstrators mounted obstructions on that day, and ignited tyres on the thoroughfares.

Experts caution that the election-related unrest could lead the country into a leadership vacuum.
