Back in 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to arrange lodging after getting there, yet upon reaching the city, a major event was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of bed down in the terminal – but quickly found Canberra airport, not like the one back home, is not open around the clock. Not knowing quite what to do and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded a bus into town and began walking in the direction of a gaming venue, reasoning I could pass the evening somewhere that was open through the night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition to succeed at an interview the next day, but as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

The world needs more people who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared out of place as a woman saw me walking aimlessly through downtown and wondered if I was OK. I explained my situation and right away she said I could sleep on a spare mattress of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, considering that was where my medical school interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided a meal: one of the sandwiches she brought back her work shift. I had access to a hot shower and somewhere safe to rest to sleep.

With hindsight, I now understand what a big chance she accepted being a woman inviting a guy who was a complete stranger stay in her room. Back then I was in my male privilege bubble and was oblivious about things like that. As a dad now, I’m amazed she offered that help – but still deeply appreciative.

I never did study at the Australian National University, and I never saw the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of generosity. My sincere desire is that the universe has repaid her generosity tenfold. Our society requires more folks like that woman.
